What it is
The sliding plate that travels with the shifter through the P R N D M 2 1 gate. Ford calls it the selector cover. Owners call it the shifter bezel, the dust cover or the trim around the gear selector.
Why yours failed
It is thin rigid plastic that moves through the gate on every gear change, in a cabin that bakes in the sun. Heat and UV embrittle it, then it splits beside the gate and opens a hole into the console. The RL-1001 is flexible TPU, so it bends and returns instead of cracking.
